‘Bubble Up’ is hypnotic indie-pop at its finest. Berlin’s Varley have really pulled something special out of the bag with this touching tribute to anxiety, self-doubt and overthinking. “It was written on the first day of my new job, totally overwhelmed and embarrassed after being given out to...” explains lead vocalist Claire-Ann. “It’s is that feeling of the pressure rising and not knowing how to keep it together and wishing you weren’t like this.” The end result is a hazy barrage of synth-soaked, reverb-heavy melodies and textures. Their music is comfortable showing off its influences, but also happily dives into innocence and vulnerability. There will be more from this three-piece in 2021. -Dan Peeke
